Training herself out of being afraid Home: dorm room Finance: she gets by History: No one really knows why the Haddons started dating, or how they stayed together long enough to get married, let alone have and raise four children. Maize was raised on a commune and was always the free-spirited type, while Samuel has an obsessive-compulsive personality that leaves little room for flexibility. Somehow, miraculously, it managed to work out. When Maize wanted to name the children after the moons they were born under, Samuel allowed her to because at least it was a specific system. They managed to balance each other out, even if they may have passed some of their neuroses onto their children (or possibly just a desire to not be like them). The Haddons moved every few years, especially when the older children were growing up, though they always stayed in the South/along the Gulf. Chrysanthemum was born in Georgia, and is the youngest Haddon child. She developed night terrors at a young age, was slow to speak, and when she finally did, it was with a marked stutter. It was also clear that she was an extremely fearful child – afraid of everything from the dark, to strangers, to dogs, to storms. Usual or unusual, it scared Chrys at least once. She also had the tendency to pick up any superstitions that she heard about, which led to her parents placing a strict ban on anyone talking about such things in front of her, especially while they lived in New Orleans. By the time she hit middle school, she was so sick and tired of being scared all the time, and being made fun of for both it and her stutter, that she resolved herself to overcome her fears, even if she has to take them on one by one. And so she has. Chrys spent a large amount of time going to speech therapy and talking to psychologists, engaging in round after round of behavioral and cognitive therapy to get over things. Though she’s nervous and anxious much of the time, she’s just confident enough in herself to know that she isn’t going crazy (98% of the time, anyway) and that anyone who deliberately sets up to scare her, knowing what she’s gone through, is no friend of hers. Her big plan is to go to college and use those years to get over more of her fears. Of course, she’s attending the same college as her brother, so it’ll be a bit easier for her to cope.
